The Idea

Reality before expression.

Brand Realisation starts from a simple premise: organisations are understood through evidence, not assertion alone.

Expression matters, but it cannot decide what is true. Before asking how an organisation should present itself, Brand Realisation asks what is happening, how that reality is experienced and where different perspectives alter the picture.

Whilst every perspective is real, each is incomplete.

An organisation is rarely experienced in its entirety. People understand it through their responsibilities, experiences, information and objectives.

Leadership sees intention and consequence at one level. Employees encounter systems, decisions and behaviour from another. Customers, partners and communities experience what reaches them. Each perspective is real. None is complete.

Difficulty begins when one perspective is mistaken for the whole.

Brand forms between intention, evidence and interpretation.

An organisation can influence what people notice and how it explains itself. It cannot independently determine the meaning people form when its behaviour, decisions and expression are encountered together.

01 / REALITY

Reality leaves evidence.

Decisions, behaviour, systems, products, services, relationships and the conditions people actually encounter.

02 / UNDERSTANDING

Understanding is formed.

Meaning formed through experience, memory, comparison, responsibility and the patterns that become visible over time.

03 / EXPRESSION

Expression can clarify.

Identity, language, communication and experience giving form to understanding rather than attempting to substitute for it.

The discipline

Four commitments, not a formula.

01

Reality precedes expression.

The organisation is examined before its preferred story is accepted as the starting point.

02

Inquiry precedes judgement.

Evidence and perspectives are gathered before a solution or conclusion is allowed to harden.

03

Difference is informative.

The aim is not to average perspectives into consensus, but to understand what each reveals and what becomes visible between them.

04

Responsibility remains with those who decide.

Brand Realisation improves the account from which decisions are made. It does not remove responsibility from those who must decide.

Not a new way to decorate the same assumptions.

Brand Realisation does not begin with a logo, a campaign, a values exercise or a communications brief.

Those may become appropriate expressions later. The first task is to understand the organisation well enough to know what any expression would need to be true of.

“Traditional branding begins with expression and hopes it reflects reality. Brand Realisation begins with reality and allows expression to emerge from it.”
